2023 Call for Proposals
Submissions Closed
Michigan Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages (MITESOL) invites professionals involved with English learners to submit proposals for our annual conference, to be held at Aquinas College (1700 Fulton St E, Grand Rapids, MI 49506) on October 14, 2023.
The theme of this year’s conference is Culture, Creativity, Connection.
MITESOL is looking for proposals that highlight the ways in which culture, creativity, and connection play a role in growing and shaping the TESOL field. More specifically, we will consider proposals that explore how we can build our teaching and learning communities by creating meaningful connections with our students and with each other. We explore the ways these learning communities can persevere and thrive outside of our various institutions and within the local and global community. It may be helpful to consider our collective achievements by asking, how do we connect to the customs, arts, and social norms of our culture(s) and/or the cultures we serve? How might authentic connections transform our communities and world for the better?
Other questions to consider:
- What activities, strategies, or methodologies of language learning center culture, creativity, and/or connection?
- How can we creatively navigate institutional and/or societal barriers to help multilingual learners and families?
- How can we engage more authentically with the communities and cultures represented in our respective, unique geographic areas of Michigan?
- What connections are necessary to keep us from being siloed in our various areas (K-12, adult ed, etc.) and how can we build on our collective knowledge?
- How can we change the way we assign value to our work to make learning spaces more collectivist in nature
- What advice would you offer others about creating meaningful connections within the field?
MITESOL invites proposals related to all aspects of ESL/ELL, including recent research, teaching, learning, policy & advocacy, technology, curriculum/materials design, standards-based instruction, assessment, program administration, and professional development. MITESOL will consider proposals on other topics unrelated to the theme as well.
