During this interactive session we will focus on the many moving parts in the EL field from the Michigan Department of Education. Kelly Alvarez will provide EL MDE updates, share PD opportunities for 22-23 school year, give an update on the exciting work that is happening on the ESL Advisory Committee among a variety of topics covered in this session. Participants will gain a deeper understanding and have a chance to ask questions and provide feedback to MDE.

Do you wish you had a better understanding of the current adult education system in Michigan? Do you want to understand how to help adult learners prior to their transition to postsecondary? This sessions will explore the main structure and overview of the state's adult education system. We will review the funding parameters, performance and outcome metrics for learners, instructional supports and strategies.

Understanding Law and Policy to Support Newcomers

This session will give a basic overview of logistic, linguistic, and cultural competency challenges faced by recent arrivals in Michigan. It will include a discussion of policy developments that impact English Language Learners who are navigating the immigration system, such as efforts to secure driver's licenses for people who are undocumented.

How to MOVE ESL Students out of ESL to Employment!

What happens when our ESL students complete or test out of CASAS? This session will explore what the Michigan Adult, Community and Alternative Education Association (MACAE) and the Michigan ESL Professional Advisory Committee (MIESLPAC) have created transition processes that programs can utilize for individual needs from reviewing transcripts and to help transition them to American Job Centers.
