Dear TESOLers,

The Fiscal Year 2024 Budget Process is underway and your voice is needed to advocate for appropriations to fund Multilingual Learners of English (MLE) and educational programs for professional development.

Please take a few moments to contact your US Senators and your US Representative to encourage funding levels vital within public and higher and adult education for MLEs and the ELT profession.

The Biden Administration recently released its FY24 Budget (you can read more on the impact for Education in discretionary spending here) and while the funding levels are encouraging, the budget process looks to be challenging.

Here is an overview of the funding levels for FY22 and FY23, along with the President's request for FY24 and TESOL's FY24. ESSA addresses MLE support in PreK-12, AEFLA addresses education for adult MLEs, and HEA addresses Teacher Quality Programs to support teacher development pipelines.

FY22 Enacted FY23 Enacted FY24 Pres FY24 Ask
ESSA
Title I $17.5b $18.4b $20.5b $20.5b
Title II-A $2.17b $2.19b $2.19b $2.3b
Title III $831m $890m $1.19b $2b
AEFLA $704.1m $729.2m $729.2m $810m
HEA (TQP) $59.1m $70m $132.1m $132.1m

Your voice is needed to advocate for funding! We have a long road ahead of us as we move towards the end of FY23 the 30th of September, so this will be one of many calls to action!

This summer we have an opportunity for in-person meetings on the Hill through TESOL's 2023 Advocacy & Policy Summit, 20-21 June - we hope to see you there! See more information on the Summit by clicking the link below.
