SIG: Post Secondary

Scope

This Special Interest Group (SIG) supports Michigan ESL teachers and administrators in universities, colleges, community colleges, Intensive English Programs (IEPs), English for Academic Purposes (EAP) programs, writing centers and language schools.

Purpose

The Post-Secondary Student Programs SIG provides venues for teachers, supervisors, advisors and administrators to share ideas, collaborate on projects, and improve the quality of ESL education in the members' institutions.

Activities

  • The SIG listserv is a forum for discussing our profession. The SIG representative uses the listserv to share news and information from the SIG, MITESOL and TESOL. To join the listserv, please contact the SIG representative.
  • SIG-sponsored sessions at the annual MITESOL conference. For example, in 2007, Post-Secondary Student Programs sponsored a panel discussion and a presentation on dealing with the recent influx of students from the Middle East.
  • Annual general meeting and informal discussion sessions at the MITESOL conference.
  • Member-initiated projects, which have included socio-political affairs (now a separate committee) and an ongoing project on admissions and transfer standards at university and community college.
  • Workshops and colloquia during the year.

Membership Participation

Members are encouraged to participate in the SIG by:

  • sending questions and answers to the SIG listserv
  • sharing resources, ideas, and lesson plans
  • proposing SIG-sponsored sessions for the annual MITESOL Conference
  • suggesting and leading projects, workshops and colloquia
