    Cambridge Michigan Language Assessments (CaMLA), in Ann Arbor, MI, is now accepting applications for its 2017 summer internship program. The CaMLA internship program provides professional training and research opportunities for English language teaching professionals and graduate students. Successful applicants will work closely with CaMLA teams on English language assessment tasks and projects that are appropriate to their interests and skills.


    Interns will be involved in activities relating to the design and construction of language assessments. These may include item writing and review, quality assurance activities, and test development projects. Interns will also have the opportunity to contribute to a variety of test review and research activities. These activities may include research design, data collection and analysis, and the documentation of results.

    University of Detroit Mercy seeks Part-time ESL Instructors

    The American Language and Culture Program, a subdivision in the Office of International Services at the University of Detroit Mercy is looking for innovative and dynamic adjunct faculty members to teach English as a Second Language to newly-arrived UDM non-immigrant international students who lack sufficient English proficiency. 

    Duties may consist of assignments in the fall and/or spring semesters as well as the program's extended summer session. This assignment may include teaching at the main campus as well as other campus sites.

    Other duties include: providing copies of syllabi and course materials to their supervisor upon request, and assigning and submitting grades; using computer and multimedia technology; participation in developing and revising curriculum.


    Applicants should have a Master's degree or be a candidate for a Masters degree in teaching English as a second language or in teaching English to speakers of other languages or in a closely related field. Strong cross-cultural communication skills and ability to communicate with speakers with limited English skills are necessary. ESL teaching experience is preferred. Overseas teaching experience and experience learning another language are desirable.

    Position Purpose
    Under the general supervision of the District's ELL Coordinator, the ELL Teacher will facilitate ELL student success and growth in academic and interpersonal skills through implementing district approved curriculum while providing the classroom teacher with assistance in providing instruction to students' whose first language is not English; documenting teaching and student progress/activities/outcomes; addressing specific educational needs of individual students and by creating a flexible, safe and optimal learning environment; and providing feedback to students, parents and administration regarding student progress, expectations, goals, etc.

    Essential Functions

    • Develops and administers school elementary or secondary curriculum consistent with school district goals and objectives.
    • Knowledge of Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol (SIOP).
    • Promotes a classroom environment that is safe and conducive to individualized and small group instruction, and student learning.
    • Develops lesson plans and instructional materials and translates lesson plans into learning experiences so as to best utilize the available time for instruction
    • Conducts ongoing assessment of student learning, and modifies instructional methods to fit individual student's needs, including students with special needs; conducts individual and small group instruction as needed.
    • Instructs students in the principles of responsible citizenship and other subject matters specified in applicable laws, as well as administrative regulations and procedures of the c school system.
    • Continues to acquire professional knowledge and learn of current developments in the educational field by attending seminars, workshops or professional meetings, or by conducting research.
    • Organizes and maintains a system for accurate and complete record-keeping, grading, and reporting for all student activities, achievement and attendance as required by district procedures and applicable laws.
    • Encourages parental involvement in students' education and ensures effective communication with students and parents.
    • Ensures that student conduct conforms with the school's standards and school district policies, and establishes and maintains standards of pupil behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in the classroom.
    • Coordinates with other elementary professional staff members, especially within grade level, to evaluate and assess curriculum, and participates in faculty meetings and committees.
    • Selects and requisitions appropriate books, instructional aids and other supplies and equipment and maintains inventory records.
    • Supervises students in activities that take place out of the classroom during the school day, including activities involving school transportation.
    • Administers standardized tests in accordance with District testing programs.

    Additional Duties
    Performs other related tasks as assigned by the Principal and other central office administrators as designated by the Superintendent.

    Qualifications Profile


    • State of Michigan Certification as a Teacher
    • Endorsement in ELL (NS) preferred or enrollment in ELL (NS)  or bi-lingual (YF) program required
    • Spanish speaking ability preferred


    • Bachelors from an accredited college or university
    • SIOP training preferred

    Successful prior teaching experience for the appropriate grade levels a plus.  Experience in working with At-Risk student population preferred.
