    The Michigan Language Center, a private language school located in Ann Arbor, seeks part-time and full-time ESL instructors for adult students.


    The Michigan Language Center’s mission is to teach English and American Culture to people from around the world and empower them in their university, career, and personal pursuits. We treat students and staff as family – with hospitality and genuine care for each individual.


    As a growing organization, we anticipate needs for more part-time and/or full-time instructors. We are looking for qualified, dynamic, creative, and enthusiastic ESL instructors to work with our adult students at varying English levels from over 50 different countries. There are opportunities to teach in a classroom environment, at a corporate location, and in private tutorials. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

    • Prepare for and teach scheduled classes and/or private tutorials.

    • Meet with the Academic Director to consult on classes, students, and administrative duties throughout the session..

    • Maintain attendance and grade records in each class and submit them at the end of each session.

    • Attend a teacher's meeting and/or all hands staff meeting during the session if one is scheduled.

    • Create, administer and grade assessments and exams according to MLC Assessment Guidelines.


    • Bachelor’s degree and ESL certification

    • At least 3 years of ESL classroom experience is preferred

    • MA degree in TESOL or related field is preferred

    • Ability to work with people in various roles (instructors, students, administrators)

    • Comfort level with technology and knowledge of how to use a variety of educational  tools

    • A “no task is too small” attitude!

    COMPENSATION: Compensation is based on experience and qualifications.

    Job Summary

    The International Learning Support Coordinator provides oversight to the operations of the International Learning Support (ILS) program. The coordinator is responsible for the development of programs, while supporting the personal and academic development of international students. The coordinator also supervises student employees to assist in programming and daily operations of the program space.

    Job Duties

    1. Advances program development for ILS. 
    2. Partners with English as a Second Language (ESL) instructors and International Student Organization (ISO) officers. 
    3. Facilitates daily conversation groups. 
    4. Provides English language assistance. 
    5. Develops and presents workshops for international students. 
    6. Hires and trains ILS tutors. 
    7. Oversees International Learning Support space. 
    8. Works collaboratively across campus for student referrals to offices such as; student relations and counseling, academic advising and registration.

    Required Qualifications

    1. Strong English grammar skills. 
    2. Experience with personal and academic coaching, tutoring, teaching, case management/outreach, and/or mentoring. 
    3. Deep understanding of diverse cultures- including histories, political systems, culinary traditions, and religions. 
    4. Ability to work independently and contribute to a team environment.

    Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

    Teaching preservice and inservice teachers (continuing education students) in a grant-funded program. Courses run in a hybrid, condensed format.

    Instructors needed for the following courses:

    FALL 2018

    “Literacy for Diverse Learners”

    This course is designed to present effective literacy instruction for linguistically, culturally, and socioeconomically diverse students.

    “Introduction to ESL”

    The introductory course in the Aquinas College ESL program. It focuses on the teaching to and the learning of K-12 English language learners.

    SPRING 2018

    “Advanced Methods of ESL”

    Focuses on two important areas of English language teaching; instructional strategies and materials.  

    “Second Language Acquisition”

    This course is an introduction to the subject of second language acquisition and learning. The prime objective of the course is to help educators better understand how people learn (or don’t learn) languages as well as to examine the complex issues surrounding SLA in educational contexts.

    QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants must have a Master's degree in teaching English as a second language or in a closely related field. ESL teaching experience in K-12 is preferred. Overseas teaching experience, higher education experience, and experience learning another language are desirable.
