About Us
MITESOL is an organization composed of a diverse group of administrators, educators, materials writers, researchers, and teacher trainers primarily from the state of Michigan involved in teaching students whose first language is not English. Our main mission is to provide leadership and support for professionals involved in teaching English to speakers of other languages by:
- Fostering improvement of programs for the education of pre- and in-service teachers of ESL
- Providing opportunities and resources for the professional development of
educators of ESL - Collaborating with educational institutions and agencies as well as professional associations to identify and resolve issues in ESL/TESOL instruction
- Coordinating information and activities with other professional organizations at the state, national, and international levels
- Encouraging development, participation, and leadership in the field of ESL/TESOL
- Advocating for quality standards in instructional programs of ESL
We are professionals, students, and interested people in the field of ESL teaching from numerous environments, including K-12, post -secondary institutions, businesses, and overseas affiliates seeking to advance the study of ESL or EFL.
MITESOL is one of over 90 affiliates of Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL), an international association of English teaching professionals.
Michigan Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages (MITESOL) was founded in March, 1975 by a group of concerned ESL educators who were seeking professional exchange, enrichment, and action. Today, MITESOL represents the interests and concerns of those who teach English to children, young people, and adults throughout the state of Michigan.
